It is absolutely mental and emotional abuse, and I think it goes far beyond shyness or lack of imagination. It has to do with the worldview that all of you worldly friends, teachers, family and neigbors are soon to be destroyed, and YOU will be bloodguilty if you don't speak up.
I think growing up JW is almost like growing up in a war-torn nation. . . . always under constant threat of everything you know being annihilated.

today i published a new article underscoring how far removed current watchtower leadership is from yesteryears leaders.
what got a person disfellowshipped by watchtower in 1981 is embraced by its current top leadership.

i passed the written test!
then i had to fill out a questionnaire in which i had to try to sound like an interesting person.

she tells me that she knows about another thing that happens to our bodies when we die in addition to buriel and cremation.. .
she tells me that they can do something really nasty to the body but its ok because they're dead so don't know about it.

i had an interesting conversation with bobby (*some names have been changed) last weekend.
he's also a successful fader going back several years before me.
but i found we had something in common that i hadn't realized.. bobby had never been particularly happy growing up.
It is well known in our cong that I suffered some sort of "mental breakdown", the details of which I would love to divulge at some time. . . Perhaps on the members only side of the forum.
I found that after the "breakdown" everyone including fellow elders were very sympathetic, and ever since then have left me alone. Last year (before a CO visit) a couple of elders did inquire about giving me a shepherding call, but my wife told them no thanks and that was it. No further harassment.

i was an elder until march 2012 until i resigned.
i then stopped going to meetings in october 2012 and have enjoyed 9 months of freedom that i have found to be jouful!
i loved learning ttatt and sites like this and jwfacts.com have been excellent.. i told the elders that i needed a break and that they should not contact me unless it was a social visit and true to their word they have done that.
This is where the whole Cognitive Dissonance Theory kicks in and logic goes out the window.
They believe they have the truth, so much so they devoted their entire lives, families and everything to it. You come along with logic and facts that punch holes in their "truth". Because of what you say, they will experience dissonance, or unease, and they have two choices when it comes to reducing this dissonance. One would be to change their beleifs: perhaps this isn't the truth, maybe it wasn't what I thought it was. This is the effortful route. Much more likely is the easy route: disregard what you have said as apostate lies from satan and get rid of you.
We all experienced CD - that's why we're here! But we all took the effortful route, and it was worth it.

this may come as a shock to some people, but the current forum structure was kind of thrown together without much real thought and then evolved a bit over time.
there are a few things that particularly grate on me and areas where i don't think the subjects work particularly well.
'friends' is a bit vague and becomes a dumping ground, news & world events vs politics & current affairs is hard to decide sometimes, child abuse is a scandal but isn't contained withing 'scandals & coverups' etc.... with a new forum platform imminent, it's a good time to solicit ideas to improve things.
